Commercial Truck Liability Insurance

The coverage every trucking company starts with. It pays for injuries and property damage your truck causes to other people.

What it covers

  • Bodily injury to other people in an accident you are responsible for
  • Damage to other vehicles and property
  • Legal defense when a claim is made against you

How much you need

Federal rules require most for-hire interstate carriers hauling general freight in trucks over 10,001 pounds to carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage. Hazardous materials require more. In practice, most brokers and shippers ask for $1,000,000.

Filings

To activate and keep your operating authority, your insurance company files proof of coverage with the FMCSA. We request the filings your authority needs as part of placing the policy.

What it does not cover

Liability insurance does not pay to repair your own truck or replace the freight you are hauling. Those are covered by physical damage and motor truck cargo coverage.

This is a general description, not a policy. What is covered depends on the terms, limits and exclusions of the policy that is issued.
